This is the second in the Time to Hike series of 4 hikes intended to help you build strength, endurance and knowledge of the trail.
The difficulty level of these hikes depends on your current fitness level BUT generally these are considered easy to moderate hikes. We practice self paced hiking. We will provide a guide and a sweep hiker so that everyone is supported and knows where to go on the trail. DGA uses various techniques to ensure that we have ample opportunity to be physically distant yet connected while hiking so that no one is lost or left behind. You are responsible for managing your own preferences for social distancing and for respecting the preferences of others.
Gear needs for these hikes is minimal, suggested gear includes a way to carry water, snacks, comfortable shoes with good tread, trekking pole/s and a flashlight or headlamp for the last two hikes. BUG SPRAY!!!
EACH INDIVIDUAL HIKE $12
End time is estimated but essentially plan for a 90 minute commitment – location listed is generic. You will receive an email with specific directions to our starting location. The Perry Lake Hiking Biking Trails have more than one trailhead, we will explore two of them. Skyline Azura Trail is in Topeka and Iliff Commons Trails are in rural Shawnee County.

There is exactly one month left to register (Deadline March 16th) for the amazing, first of its kind – Dirty Girls’ Get Away which is scheduled for April 17th, 18th and 19th! We will be visiting the Lied Lodge in Nebraska City, Nebraska. It is a gorgeous and comfortable lodge with many amenities!
From gorgeous rooms, great food, pool, jacuzzi, spa and wines made on site at the Arbor Day Farm! In fact, I’m hoping to participate in the Friday night wine tasting that they offer – $5 for 4 tastes – surely I’ll find one I like!
We will spend Friday evening relaxing and socializing in the Lied Lodge. As is usual with us Dirty Girls, the Tribal Gathering and social time will be divine! We will share some life stories and encouragement as we prepare for a day of hiking on Saturday. Our goal is to build you up and encourage you to challenge yourself to enjoy new adventures! Doesn’t this little spot look like a nice place to hang out and chat with some Dirty Girls?
Saturday, after a delicious breakfast, we will carpool to “Nebraska’s best kept secret” Indian Cave State Park!
We will spend Saturday hiking the trails along the Mighty Missouri River. The hills and bluffs offer excellent views from the 25 miles of trails throughout the park. The Dirty Mama’s have mapped out a hike that can accommodate the short hiker and the long hiker! We will enjoy a boxed lunch on the trail (included in your cost and furnished by the Lied Lodge).
I enjoyed a great weekend with my wonderful friends last year which is when the plan for this Dirty Girl Get Away was hatched! Although we camped, we experienced a pretty cold night and lots of blowing dirt so we thought that it would be well worth it to combine comfort with our outdoor adventure! The packages that we have created are designed to meet the financial situation of a variety of Dirty Girls. (This is a Dirty Girl only event – no Dudes – but it is open to both club members and others.) The packages all include lodging, breakfast in the mornings Saturday and Sunday, Saturday lunch and dinner with one beverage. If you can’t get away on Friday, it is a short 2 hour drive to join us Saturday morning!
For the short hikers, local exploration in Indian Cave State Park includes a variety of pretty cool spots that you can visit with MacGyver Julie while the long hikers keep moving. The day should be beautiful! After a full day, we will return to the Lied Lodge for some chillaxing and a delicious dinner in the Timber Lodge (instead of a tent!)!
We will provide a really cool commemorative craft during the evening hours as well as some quality social time with a focus on self-care and refreshing your spirit! Sunday morning, we will leisurely enjoy breakfast together, then enjoy a relaxing hike into the Arbor Day Farm Grounds to visit the Treehouse 50 feet in the air! It looks SO cool! Then we will all head home, refreshed and rejuvenated (oh, who am I kidding we will most likely be a bit tired from such an awesome time!).
Check out this event in the Dirty Shop and get signed up now! You can choose the package that best fits you. Make a plan and sign up with a roommate or for the Deluxe Solo Package. All the details are available here!
Hope you can join us! Questions? Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org!
Time on the trail as fall begins is more beautiful than ever! Everyone who has been joining the Dirty Girls for time on the trail has been improving their fitness level and, hopefully, their peace of mind! We are a diverse group at this point, some are up to running or speed wogging others are just starting out on the trail. I am SOOO excited to see this moving forward! People are getting outside, stretching their daily routines and working to feel good!
I can’t wait for the Half Day Hike. I am hoping that it freezes once to kill some bugs and maybe cut down the brush. Even if it doesn’t, it will be awesome! This will be the hike to bring along the camera – hopefully we will see some good sights! In addition to the hike, I am looking forward to sitting around the campfire at the end of the hike, relaxing with the Dirty Girls. I love chillaxing around the fire on any occasion but this will be especially lovely!
I am absolutely thrilled that so many Dirty Girls are hitting the trail with me. Lately. I have been focusing on what to do on the days we aren’t on the trail. I, for one, have been slacking on that a bit! I need to do some more core strengthening and stretching – I need a day of good yoga each week! (Someday, when I have a Dirty Girl Clubhouse/outfitter store, I will have yoga twice a week!) So… I am making a goal to add to my usual three days a week on the trail! I want to ride my bike twice a week, do yoga once a week and ADD some basic strength moves to each workout day. This will take some practice – new habits always do. I figure, add some sit ups, push ups (Dirty Girl Jenni has some amazing arms and has inspired me!) and my physical therapy exercises again. This should only add a thirty minute routine maybe four days a week. It was sooo much easier when working out was part of my work day!
Dirty Girls don’t give up!!
Exercise and healthy eating are 100% part of my daily life. Sure, I eat too much of some things. I eat junk food and I drink, generally in moderation. It’s not a diet, it is just how life is… adding a few more minutes of exercise shouldn’t be impossible. I would, of course, love to be thinner and firmer and more fit but really, generally, I feel great! The motivator for my activity isn’t so much weight loss, (it was 100% about that at one time) now my motivation is being fit, feeling great, sleeping tight and having this awesome energy to live my life. What motivates you? Why are you getting up and getting out? Are there tangible rewards for you? Are you walking or working out when you aren’t on the trail? If you aren’t exercising and getting outside regularly, how can you work it into your day? It doesn’t matter if you are fast and cranking out a 30 minute 5K (the cross country boys are doing it in less than 20 minutes!) or walking slowly and steadily down the road, just keep moving! Hang out with some Dirty Girls and get it going on!!
As the season changes, the trail changes. The colors are different and the things that you can see are different. It’s also not as humid! Our weekly Dirty Girl Trail Club has been maintaining our momentum and drawing more Dirty Girls out to the trail. We have also been joined by some Dirty Dudes! We have been focused on increasing our fitness level and getting our heart rates up. We have also enjoyed the company and comradery out on the trail. It has been wonderful getting to know new people and long time acquaintances more throughly. I am excited about the accountability that comes with scheduling an event and having others count on you to be there. Big plus on the whole Club theory! Plus, we are exchanging and trading information about activities, options and life in general as we go along. One such resource is the Friends of the Kaw website http://kansasriver.org a handy resource about accessing the Kansas River which Dirty Girls love!
Two of us Dirty Girls hit Lake Perry on Saturday and enjoyed the warm, clear fall day on Lake Perry. The migratory birds are interesting, currently the black wing-tipped pelicans are in town. They are pretty amazing, their wing span is six feet from tip to tip! Of course I continue to love the Great Blue Herons, they are sort of mysterious. They appear graceful in flight but they are awkward at take off and they make an amazing ugly, croaking noise! Julie and I enjoyed our afternoon, we trekked down a little creek that joins Lake Perry. Pretty cool to be able to paddle back into an area that generally can’t be accessed. We also paddled into the wind to an old boat ramp to explore. Good day.
Hope you have been getting outside to move and enjoy the fall weather! If you haven’t, get on it!! Grab a Dirty Girl and go outside!!
