Beginning Backpacking in Nebraska

Join us March 19th and 20th for this excursion to Nebraska for the perfect beginning backpacking adventure!   We’ve scoped out the trail, planned the camping spot and we’re prepared to guide you, support your experience on the trail and have a GREAT adventure with YOU!  We will travel to Indian Cave State Park near Shubert, Nebraska.  We will backpack a total of 9ish miles with gorgeous scenery of the Missouri River Valley.   Although this is a beginning backpacking adventure, the trail is rated as moderately difficult with some definite inclines and declines. The trail winds through narrow hollows and up and along rugged ridges.  Participants can choose to arrive Friday  for a night of camping or to arrive to begin the backpacking adventure at 11am.

What are you paying for?  We’ve done all the planning, made reservations, made contact with area park rangers and have a plan if an emergency arises. We’ve also pre-hiked and chosen a place to camp mid-way through the hike. We’ll ensure that we have filtered drinking and cooking water and together we’ll gather firewood for time around the fire before bed.  In addition, we’ll provide you with a gear list and clothing suggestions so you will be prepared.  Two experienced Dirty Girl Guides will be with you every step of the way!

Bring:  Your own gear, clothing and food/snacks for the adventure.

We may schedule a BONUS pre-hike and pack weigh in at Perry Lake before the event occurs.

COVID Safety – this is an outdoor activity and we will be able to maintain social distancing the majority of the time.  However, should you test positive for Covid prior to the trip, EMAIL us immediately at  adventure@dirtygirladventures.net.  Please plan to follow all of the current CDC guidelines for quarantine, isolation.  This will help us in assuring the safety of all those participating.

What are you paying for?  Dirty Girl Adventures, LLC will provide a guide, support on the trail and docent information throughout the event. We will also monitor the weather and conditions to ensure that our event and participants are safe.  Our knowledgeable and informed guide service includes a leading guide and a sweep guide during the hike. Trail support including: first aid, knowledge of the environment and locale, safety monitoring, pacing, interpretive information on the environment and location are included.

In case you are wondering about our refund policy – refunds are given up to one week before the date of the event no questions asked. After that, refunds are not given unless there are exceptional circumstances. Dirty Girl Adventures may cancel an event due to weather or conditions. Everyone will receive a refund if that is the reason for the cancellation. We will hike in cool weather but rain and cold weather or snowy conditions that we believe to be too cold or dangerous will cancel this event. Cancellation only occurs in severe weather or other dangerous conditions.

 

Sandhill Adventure North Platte, Nebraska

Join us for a very special weekend that is chock full of ADVENTURE!  The Sandhill Adventure in North Platte, Nebraska is an “almost” all-inclusive adventure.  We will enjoy multiple unique experiences during this adventure.  We will see migrating Sandhill Cranes, dancing Prairie Chickens, listen to Meadowlark song, see gorgeous views and enjoy quality time in nature and together.  We have contracted with the best local guide to curate our experiences and to guide us to several private property locations for these adventures.  We’ve also selected the weekend of March 18th, 19th and 20th for an added bonus to our experience… FULL MOON WEEKEND!!  This is an awesome adventure to share with a friend or your favorite Dirty Dude!  No pets, no one under age 18.

You will drive yourself to North Platte, this is about a 6-hour drive from Topeka.  Carpooling is encouraged!  Plan to arrive by 6:30pm Friday March 18th ready for ADVENTURE!

Friday March 18th, 6:30pm we will meet at La Quinta Inn, our fabulous hotel, where we will be picked up for our first adventure.  That evening we will observe sunset and the Sandhill Cranes coming in to roost on the Platte River, foraging and dancing in fields and waking up to continue their journey. “Scientists estimate that approximately 80 percent of all migratory Sandhill Cranes in North America use a 75-mile stretch of Nebraska’s Platte River during spring migration; more than a half-million cranes “stage” in this area, preparing to continue the long journey north to breeding grounds in Canada and Alaska. During migration, they may fly as many as 400 miles in one day.” (from the American Bird Conservancy). This is one of nature’s great migrations and a wonder to observe. Last year, when we were in North Platte, there were a reported 50,000 Sandhill cranes in the state of Nebraska for the weekend.

Saturday March 19th, 5:00am After a yummy continental breakfast, we will travel out of town to observe the Lesser Prairie Chickens in their natural prairie habitat.  Our local guide will set us up for a sunrise, dancing Prairie Chickens and time on the open prairie. This is a very special opportunity as the Lesser Prairie Chickens are a vulnerable population with continuous conversation about being moved to threatened or endangered.

Saturday March 19th, 11:00am

This little portion of the trip was requested by last year’s group, HORSEBACK RIDES!  We will visit Dusty Trails Ranch where we can ride horses, meet all the animals that live on the ranch and enjoy a box lunch catered from a local eatery.

Saturday March 19th, 1:00pm Our last adventure of the day will be a bus tour through the countryside with clear views of the Sandhill Cranes dancing and feeding to prepare for their long flight north. This tour will provide us with more information about the cranes, the opportunity to view them fairly close in the daylight.  We will return to the hotel to relax and regroup before dinner. Dinner on Saturday evening is on your own or you can join us for a group dining experience at one of the delicious local restaurants we’ve discovered.

Sunday March 20th 5:30am Our final group experience will take us back to the North Platte River where we will have the opportunity to watch the sunrise and listen to the Sandhill Cranes awaken and take flight.  This last visit to the river will be over by 9:30am ish… this will allow you time for a little shopping, extra exploring or an early start home.

Journey to Wholehearted Living in 2022!

“Wholehearted living is about engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness.  It means cultivating the courage, compassion and connection to wake up in the morning and think No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough.  It’s going to bed at night thinking, Yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I am brave and worthy of love and belonging.”             – Brene Brown, Gifts of Imperfection Join Dirty Girl Adventures on a special journey to develop a map that will lead you to wholehearted living during 2022.  This 4 week class will focus on 10 strategies that we can implement to live fully, and generate self-awareness and self-acceptance.  The class includes 4 group sessions at Compass Point.  There will be reading, journaling and other self-reflection activities to guide you along your journey, and safe opportunities to discuss these issues with others in the group.   Art and craft activities will help you move what you have learned from your head to your heart, through your hands.  The art you create will serve as a daily reminder throughout 2022 to keep you on the right path. Journey to whole-hearted living in 2022 will pull knowledge and information from Brene Brown, Kristen Neff, Rachel Hollis and many other teachers of self-improvement.  This class includes 12 hours of support, guidance and encouragement as well as opportunities to share and discuss your thoughts, ideas and worries. Class times:  4 Sundays March 6, 27 and April 3, 24 Location:  Compass Point home of Dirty Girl Adventures You will need a Journal or notebook and a copy of The Gifts of Imperfection by Brenè Brown. This book is available at your local Bookstore or Library.   It is also available on Audible and Amazon. All other supplies will be provided. Our lead teacher for this class series is Jennifer Woerner.  She is the Co-Owner and Creative Director of Dirty Girl Adventures, LLC, and Compass Point. She has 22 years of experience as an Occupational Therapist and a lifetime of experience as an Outdoor Adventurer. She has experience in life skills therapies, environmental education, outdoor adventure, fitness, and nutrition. Denise Selbee-Koch will be the co-teacher throughout this class series.  She is the Original Dirty Girl and Co-Owner of Dirty Girl Adventures, LLC and Compass Point. She has 25 years of experience as a Social Worker and a lifetime of experience as an Outdoor Adventurer. Denise is a Licensed Master’s Level Social Worker with experience in individual and family therapy, environmental education, outdoor adventure, fitness, and nutrition. Trail Work – Hike Day

Join us for some time on the trail, we will hike and work along Section 3 of the Perry Lake Trail.  Trail work involves loppers, painting blazes to mark the trail,  and pushing fallen logs off trail.  This section is about 3 miles and is a beautiful hike!

When:  Sunday March 6th, 9am to 12pm

Where:  Old Military Trail parking lot – west side of Ferguson Road before 92hwy – Google map link

Bring/wear:  comfy hiking clothes,  good trail shoes, gloves, water, snacks, day pack to hold all your stuff – might be some mud so bring a bag for the mud shoes and slip ons for the drive home

Let’s HIKE!

Join us on SUNDAY February 6th for an afternoon on the Perry Lake Trail.  We will travel 4-5ish miles on the PLT along the lakeshore on varied terrain.  We will cover some uneven ground potentially including steep inclines/declines, rocky terrain, with some time in the pasture and through the timber.  This trail is beautiful and will afford us views of the sky, the lake and some hopefully some wildlife including eagles as well as other migratory birds along the trail.

Winter hiking is AMAZING! Remember that your body temperature raises about 20* when you’re moving.  There are no bugs or  snakes and no brush growing up around the trail.

Winter Fun!

We will hike in cold and in snow, but we ARE watching the weather and monitoring the impact on the trail conditions.  We will identify the section of trail that we’ll be hiking by Friday February 5th in an email to those who have signed up.

We very much want to keep everyone feeling comfortable and safe so we’ll be enjoying an out and back hike with excellent scenery all along the way.

What: Hike at Perry Lake

When:  SUNDAY FEBRUARY 6th 12:00pm

Bring:  Trekking poles, daypack, snacks, water, thermos of warmth

Wear:  Layers, hat, gloves, good trail boots or shoes – consider a second pair of socks and shoes for the ride home if there is snow on the ground – dry shoes are comfy!

SPECIAL TIPS… Are you getting ready for an upcoming BACKPACKING TRIP??  Pack that pack with some practice level weight and carry it on this hike to get comfortable.  Jennifer will help you tweak your fit and weigh your bag.
